As we head into spring break, I’d like to reflect on the accomplishments of our students and the ways they are already making an impact in our community.
Across Roseburg Schools, students are living out the values that guide our work: inspiring growth, building community and expanding opportunities.
At a time when broad narratives can paint an incomplete picture of public education, it is important to stay grounded in what we are seeing locally: steady, meaningful growth.
Mid-year data shows our students are growing at rates that meet or exceed national averages in several areas, particularly reading. Roseburg Schools Director of Teaching & Learning Dr. Jill Weber shared this data during February's School Board work session, and I encourage you to take a few minutes to
watch the full presentation.
That same purpose is reflected in how our students build community.
Across our schools, students are creating spaces where others feel seen, valued and supported. Our Future First Citizen finalists represent the very best of Roseburg, demonstrating character, service and a commitment to something greater than themselves.
At Winchester Elementary, second-graders recently demonstrated courage and empathy by writing and sharing poetry with their peers. The spirit of community was also on full display at the Roseburg High School A.R.T. Assembly.
Students are also expanding opportunities as they prepare for what comes next.
Through our Career and Technical Education programs, students are exploring career pathways and gaining real-world experience that leads to high-demand, family-supporting careers.
That same drive extends beyond the classroom.
Roseburg High School Cheer recently earned its first national title, and our high school choir students advanced to state after multiple first-place finishes at the Oregon Music Educators Association District Solo & Ensemble Contest.
These outcomes are not accidental. They are the result of a shared commitment between our educators, our families and our community, along with a continued focus on the experiences and opportunities that support students over time. That focus is creating real momentum in our schools.
At the same time, there is more work ahead. Our responsibility is to match the potential our students demonstrate every day by staying focused on their needs and making thoughtful decisions that support both current and future generations.
In the months ahead, I look forward to introducing new opportunities to celebrate our students, highlight their stories and stay connected as a community.
Thank you for the role you play in supporting our schools. I hope you have a restful spring break, and I look forward to continuing this work together.
Sincerely,
Jared Cordon
