Message from the Superintendent

Dear Roseburg families,

One of our most important responsibilities as a school district is to help students see a future for themselves, one that is meaningful, attainable and connected to the community they call home.

For several years, Roseburg Schools has been strengthening career pathways that connect classroom learning to real-world opportunities. These pathways allow students to explore interests, earn college credit, gain industry-aligned skills, and graduate better prepared for college, careers or both. They are developed in partnership with local employers, meet national standards, and are aligned to the workforce needs of Douglas County.

This month, the Roseburg Schools Board of Directors and the Umpqua Community College Board of Directors approved an important next step in that work.

Roseburg Schools is entering into a long-term partnership with UCC to support the new Welcome Center and Medical Careers Hub currently under construction on the college’s campus. Through a one-time, strategic investment, Roseburg High School students pursuing healthcare pathways will have access to dedicated instructional space and expanded programming close to home.

Healthcare is one of our region’s most critical workforce needs. By growing this pathway locally, we are helping students prepare for careers that are deeply meaningful, offer family-supporting wages, and directly support the health and well-being of our community by expanding the local pool of healthcare providers. Increasing skilled workers within healthcare and across other industries means more services available locally and a stronger regional economy. Just as importantly, we are creating opportunities for students to stay local if they choose, learning, training, and ultimately serving the community that raised them.

This partnership builds on success already underway. Roseburg students are earning college credit through dual enrollment, saving families significant tuition costs, and graduating at higher rates when they complete pathway coursework. The Medical Careers Hub allows us to expand those opportunities and reach more students.

We also know the importance of responsible stewardship. This is a one-time investment, funded outside of our general operating budget, and it does not reduce classroom staffing or daily school operations. It reflects long-term planning and a commitment to aligning education with opportunity while maintaining financial stability.

At the same time, we remain focused on our broader responsibilities, including addressing aging facilities, managing rising costs, and planning transparently for the future with our community.

This work reflects a simple belief: When we invest in clear pathways for students, we strengthen our schools, our workforce and our community as a whole. Thank you for your continued support of Roseburg Schools and for believing in the potential of our students.

With appreciation,

Jared Cordon
Superintendent

District and Community News

Caring for our Aging Schools

Cold morning temperatures in recent weeks are putting the age of our school buildings to the test. As temperatures dipped into the low 30s recently, Sunnyslope Elementary School students arrived to classrooms that were colder than usual while our maintenance team worked to restore heat following a boiler failure.

Our community often hears about how warm classrooms can get during the late spring and early fall in buildings without air conditioning, but those same aging systems are also tested in winter. Keeping schools comfortable when temperatures swing to either extreme is an ongoing challenge.

Sunnyslope’s heating system, like many across the district, is decades old. Caring for aging buildings is a constant responsibility, and cold weather can place added strain on equipment that has been in service for generations. Our district maintenance crews, who start work as early as 3 am most days, were on site early to address the issue and get warmth back into the building as quickly as possible.

Sunnyslope isn’t the only school that faces these challenges. Fremont Middle School’s heating systems date back to the 1950s and require frequent attention during colder months. The district’s Central Office also experienced a heating outage recently while repairs were underway.

Heating, plumbing and electrical issues can arise anywhere across our schools, especially as buildings age. From furnaces and boilers to pipes and panels, maintaining safe, warm and dry learning environments takes daily effort and careful planning.

We are grateful for our maintenance team’s quick response and dedication, and for the patience and understanding of students, staff and families when issues arise. As we continue caring for facilities across the district, we remain committed to doing everything we can to keep our schools safe and comfortable while working toward long-term solutions for aging buildings.

Students Honor Veterans and Learn Through Lived Experience

Honoring our veterans and building community are values we hold deeply. To us, community extends far beyond our district, it lives across generations, shared experiences, and collective history.

We believe it’s important for students to understand the wisdom that comes from those who came before them, especially from veterans who have served our country and helped protect the freedoms our students experience in their daily lives. Creating space for these connections fosters reverence, gratitude and respect, lessons that stay with students long after they leave our classrooms.

Following our Salute to Service at Roseburg High School, we are continuing that work by honoring each veteran individually. In the weeks ahead, we will be sharing their photos and reflections on our social media platforms as a way to recognize their service and the meaningful impact they had on our campus.

These shared stories remind us that learning happens through listening, honoring and building relationships that connect our schools to the broader community.

We invite you to follow along and help us celebrate these veterans by watching for their tributes on Roseburg Schools’ Facebook and Instagram pages.

How We Make Delay and Closure Decisions

Winter weather means it’s time to prepare for potential school delays and closures.

When severe weather is in the forecast, Roseburg Schools decides whether to delay or close school based on the following considerations:

  • the ability to operate school buses safely
  • the ability of students and parents to drive safely
  • the ability of students to walk safely
  • the ability of employees to get to work on time and safely

When we’re expecting ice or snow, district staff start checking road conditions around 4 in the morning, by driving some bus routes and tuning into local weather reports.

Our priority is to ensure that travel is safe for ALL students. While conditions in some areas of town may appear clear, other areas may be experiencing ice, heavy snow or other hazardous conditions.

Decisions to delay or close school will be made by 5:30 a.m. A decision to close school following a delay will be made by 7:30 a.m. The decision to delay or close school may be made the day prior if necessary.

Families will receive notifications through our ParentSquare Urgent Alert system (text, email, phone call) and can refer to our website and Facebook page for notifications as well.

Please ensure we have the correct contact information on file by signing in and/or registering your ParentSquare account and confirming your email address and phone number. You can request changes to your contact information through ParentSquare or by contacting your child’s school directly.

Teacher of the Year Nominations Open

Nominations are now open for the Oregon Regional Teacher of the Year, and this is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the incredible educators across our district who inspire, support and uplift students every day.

Led by the Oregon Department of Education in partnership with the Oregon Lottery, this statewide program honors outstanding teachers and recognizes the dedication, care and excellence they bring to their classrooms. Regional Teachers of the Year receive a $1,000 cash prize, and one honoree is named Oregon Teacher of the Year, earning a $10,000 award and statewide recognition.

In recent years, we’ve been proud to see Roseburg educators recognized through this program, powerful reminders of the exceptional teaching talent right here in our district.

Anyone can nominate a teacher, including families, students, staff and community members. We encourage you to help recognize the educators who make a lasting difference in students’ lives.

Nominations are open through February 11 and can be submitted at oregonteacheroftheyear.org.

Thank you for helping us celebrate the heart and impact of our teachers!

Series of graphics featuring Grads in the Real World, RHS grads contributing to their community

Roseburg Schools and UCC Partner to Build Career Pathways

This month, Roseburg Schools and Umpqua Community College officially solidified a partnership rooted in possibility. With dedicated space for Roseburg High School students on the UCC campus, we are creating new, hands-on healthcare pathways that connect learning to purpose, right here in our community.

This collaboration reflects a shared belief that when students can see where they’re headed, they thrive. By learning in real-world environments and engaging in career-connected opportunities earlier, students gain clarity, confidence and momentum toward their future.

That future is already taking shape in the lives of our alumni. Grads in the Real World is a storytelling series that highlights Roseburg High School graduates who are building meaningful careers, contributing to their communities, and putting their education to work across Douglas County.

You can explore the series on Roseburg Schools’ Facebook and Instagram pages, where we share alumni stories that illustrate the pathways we are paving for today’s students, and tomorrow’s workforce.

Know an RHS graduate doing great things in our community? We’d love to feature them. Email communications@roseburg.k12.or.us to nominate someone to be part of Grads in the Real World.

Celebrating School Board Recognition Month

January is School Board Recognition Month, an opportunity to formally recognize the dedicated volunteers who serve on the Roseburg School Board of Directors.

School board members play a vital role in shaping the direction of our district. They volunteer their time to guide work related to educational excellence, policy budgeting, student safety and community advocacy, all with a shared focus on supporting students, families and the long-term success of our community.

Each board member brings a unique perspective to this work, shaped by their personal experiences and commitment to public service. Together, they serve as a governance team that helps ensure our schools remain strong, responsive and student-centered.

Observing School Board Recognition Month gives us the opportunity to pause and express our appreciation for the leadership, care and responsibility our board members carry year-round. While January offers a moment of formal recognition, we are grateful every day for the time and heart they give in service of Roseburg Schools.

Join us on Roseburg Schools’ social media channels as we celebrate the achievements, stories and everyday moments that make our students and staff extraordinary.
