Message from the Superintendent

Dear Roseburg community,

It is such a gift to be able to look to our students for examples of kindness and compassion. As superintendent of Roseburg Schools, I have the honor of witnessing what more than 5,300 young hearts are capable of each day. Each student is a light illuminating our community’s path to continued success, and the dedication of our wonderful community partners helps strengthen that path for our students to follow and thrive.

Seeing our students grow reminds us not only of how extraordinary they are, but also how remarkable the families in our community continue to be. Every day, our team sees the investment families are making in their children. It shows in their hard work, enthusiasm, and commitment to self-discovery and growth. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to every family we have the privilege of serving. I look forward to continuing to nurture our partnership, united by a shared goal of helping each student reach their fullest potential.

Even on the toughest days, the light of our students shines through in countless ways. This week, Roseburg High School leadership students reminded us how powerful compassion can be when they organized a healing tree ceremony to promote suicide prevention. The tree they planted now stands as a lasting symbol of hope and a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can save a life. Fir Grove second-graders explored public service during visits to the Douglas County Public Library, City Hall, and the Roseburg Public Safety Center, while Sunnyslope fourth-graders learned about the meaningful traditions of the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians. Across the district, students are stepping up as active contributors in their schools and neighborhoods, leading fundraisers, creating anti-bullying initiatives, and honoring veterans through meaningful projects and acts of gratitude.

As we approach the holiday season, I am reminded how much there is to be grateful for. First and foremost, I am deeply thankful for the partnership we share with families across the district. I am also incredibly appreciative of the ongoing support our community provides, from the career pathways our business leaders are helping create, to the agencies working tirelessly to meet family needs, to the dedication of our staff and partners who continue to open doors of opportunity for our students.

The connection and care across Roseburg Schools fills me with gratitude and reminds me daily of what it means to belong to something greater than myself. I look forward to meeting the challenges ahead knowing I am part of a community that truly cares for and supports one another. When students succeed, our community grows, and together we build a foundation rooted in hope, growth and shared purpose.

To our students, staff, families and partners, thank you for continually showing what it means to inspire growth, expand opportunities and build community.

Warmly,
Jared Cordon
Superintendent
